On June 30, 2009 CAGC members
Dr. GE Lan, Dr. Haiqing Liu, Mrs. Alice Wright, Ms. Nan Lu and Dr. Kaishu
Ling (CAGC president) were invited to give presentations on China to
more than 60 summer campers (ranging from age 5 to 12 year old) in downtown
Charleston. This special summer camp program was designed mainly for
kids with disadvantage backgrounds. The responses to our presentations
were great! Ms. Patty Smith, the program coordinator, wrote an email
to me after the presentations and said this “The children loved your
presentation and getting their names in Chinese! They came down to my
learning room and were telling me all about China. I asked them to draw
pictures of their favorite Chinese feature and many drew pictures of
the Chinese dragon. Two drew a picture of a red necklace. I wasn't sure
what that was, but they all seemed to know. Many drew pictures of the
Great Wall. Your talk and GE Lan's talk made a huge impression on them.
They have not gotten excited over the other countries as they have for
China. Even the littlest children knew that Pandas were from China when
I asked what unusual animal comes from China. Thank you so much for
taking off to spend time with the children. Many are foster children
and really have no home. So your love and attention made their day much
brighter. Oh, a few children pulled out red envelopes with money in
them. They were very excited and showing everyone the 2 dollar bill. That
was so neat! They will keep that and remember you forever! Thanks again
and God bless you!” |
